2008 Summer Fisheries Jobs

Spend your summer working outdoors on National Forest lands

 

Employer: U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Center for Aquatic Technology Transfer

Pay Rate: $11.34 per hr; GS-3

Positions available: 3 – 10; dependent on funding

Duration: May 12 – August 15, 2008


Job Requirements

  • completion of 1 year above high school or 6 months general experience
  • must be pre-enrolled to attend college as undergraduate or graduate student in fall 2008
  • valid state driver’s license and less than two accidents for which you were at fault and less than three traffic violations since May 2005 (background checks are performed)
  • ability to hike in mountainous terrain, streams, and rivers, with a backpack weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • have a personal credit card for travel expenses (will be reimbursed)
  • interest in the outdoors, specifically streams and rivers
  • enthusiasm and good attitude, even under adverse conditions
  • no experience necessary; training is provided for all equipment and techniques


Job Duties

Crews will work on a variety of projects in National Forests throughout the southeastern U. S.

Duties are primarily split between two tasks:

Stream inventories: Teams measure habitat attributes and sample fish while wading several miles of stream each day. Equipment includes backpack electrofishers, hipchain, clinometer, GPS, and electronic data recorders.

Fish passage surveys: Teams measure road-stream crossing structures and stream habitat at multiple crossings each day. Equipment includes standard survey equipment (rod and level), GPS, and electronic data recorders.

Crew members may be assigned to other duties as opportunities arise during the summer.

Crews are based in Blacksburg, VA, but spend extended periods of time (typically 2-4 weeks per trip) away from Blacksburg, travel extensively throughout the southeastern U. S., and camp when necessary. Housing in Blacksburg is not provided, however summer subleases are readily available. Crews travel in Forest Service vehicles and work related travel expenses are reimbursed. All field equipment (waders, tents, etc.) is provided.
